DUBAI — On Thursday, March 17, 2016, Zayed University’s Peer Health Educators (PHE) organized a screening of 2011 movie “Asmaa” about an HIV victim on a journey of recovery. The audience was comprised of female staff and educators from the university.

Each year UNICEF provides the PHEs with training which helps them reduce the stigma around HIV/AIDS victims. UNICEF also joined with the Ministry of Health and Prevention to start a campaign raising awareness of the life-threatening virus.

The ZU’s PHE initiative was established three years ago and was publicized at Zayed University, along with the help of the PHEs. The main objective of this international and national is to inform people about the threats that the virus poses.

The Peer Health Educator program is open for new staff recruitment at the beginning of every year. Students who register later during the year can still act as volunteers at the student organization until training happens at the beginning of the next academic year.

Here is more information about the PHE program from our interview with Buthaina Bin Hafidh and Maryam Lootah. Students interested in joining this worthy effort can contact either of these PHEs or Dalia Haroun, assistant professor in the College of Sustainability Sciences and Humanities.
