DUBAI – Graphic design students featured their gameboard designs at an exhibition in Dubai between May 3 and May 12.

The gameboards were designed in the graphic design course taught by Prof. Petra Merhy.

The games are based on quizzes, survival, finances and crime mysteries. One game is about ingredient-gathering for baking.

Many games, such as “Freejna,” are devoted to Emirati traditions. “Freejna” is based on children’s TV series “Freej.” Other pop-culture influences in boardgames include anime, K-pop and “Hunger Games.”

Hamda Almannaee, a graphic design major in the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises, created the K-pop gameboard. She reflects on what she learned while working on her project.

“As a designer, I always had to connect it back to my target audience, which were K-pop fans and Y2K-inspired themes, so a lot of that really had to reflect through the gameboard design,” Almannaee says.
