ABU DHABI — There are many hobbies students in this region of the world pursue, including motor sports, mixed martial arts, jogging, jet-skiing and scuba diving, to name a few.
However, it is unique to find a student who has a passion for testing the laws of gravity — by jumping out of a plane.
That is exactly what Hamad Al Mulla, a second-year student in the College of Communication and Media Sciences in Zayed University-Abu Dhabi, does. Mr. Mulla spends his weekends in the renowned SkyDive Dubai facility, which has hosted the likes of actors Tyrese Gibson and Will Smith, as well as international singers Flo Rida and Ellie Goulding.
“I take pride in the fact that I practice such a unique activity, an activity that requires passion, confidence, and both mental and physical strength,” Mr. Al Mulla said recently before yet another weekend of jumping out of planes over Dubai.
Furthermore, when asked about offering lessons to fellow students, he added: “The sport is not for the faint of heart. The sport is for people that appreciate challenging experiences that can help boost their confidence through challenging their fears. Therefore, I would not offer lessons to most of my friends in the university due to their unbeatable fear of heights.”
His next jump will be special, as he intends on jumping with the ZU flag with him.
Mr. Al Mulla, who is also one of the few military students majoring in integrated strategic communications, plans on giving up his skydiving activities as soon as he gets married in August of this year.
“I would feel selfish to have my wife worry about me getting into an unfortunate accident while she’s waiting at home for me to get back safely,” Mr. Al Mulla said. “It isn’t worth it.”
Until his nuptials, he plans to jump every weekend. Just thinking about it brings a smile to his face.
